What Business Owners Shouldn’t Do on Twitter

Are you using Twitter in a way that makes people unfollow you or filter you from their timelines? Twitter is an useful tool for marketers, website owners and SEO professionals, but you will only make the most out of your experience if you use the service in a courteous way. Furthermore, if you’re using Twitter to gain new readers or customers, these mistakes might prevent you from maximizing your results.

1. Not Using Your Account

You might not be gaining the benefits of Twitter if you don’t use it at all, but you’re definitely hurting yourself if you create an account that you don’t use. Users might be trying to contact you or view the dead account as a sign that you’re not with the times. Furthermore, if you start your account and expect an immediate ROI, you might be disappointed and consider giving up, but these things take time. Stick with it.

2. Poor Timing
The issue of timing when you tweet is a difficult one. You want to tweet multiple times per day, but you don’t want to tweet so much that you annoy people. You want to cover multiple time zones, but you don’t want to only tweet at the same time. When it comes to timing, you definitely want to use a tool that lets you schedule your tweets. If you can’t remember the last time you used Twitter, you’re not using the site to its full potential. It’s the easiest way to appear active without becoming annoying, while minimizing the amount of time you spend on Twitter.

3. Lack of Interaction
Twitter is a social network, and the social part is important. Sure, you want to post content, but you don’t want to do just that. You need to take the time to engage with your followers. Reply to those who send you messages, jump into conversations that are relevant to your industries and let your friends know that you’re a real person, just like they are. Twitter’s trending topics make it pretty easy to see what people are talking about. Figure out how that relates to you, and use it in your favor.

4. Me, Me, Me
When you’re interesting on Twitter, you don’t just want to post news about your business. Chances are, no one else cares about your business quite as much as you do, and that’s not the way to provide valuable content to your readers. Instead, retweet others and post links with industry news. If you’re a real estate agent and the local economy is looking up, why not post a link to a local new source? That gives you fresh content that Twitter users will find entertaining and engaging.

5. Lack of Original Content
While you want to post links to others’ websites and retweet informative or amusing posts, you want to provide your own unique content. If you don’t, you just appear as a source of secondhand knowledge, and there’s no reason for Twitter users to follow you when they can just go to the source. Link to your blog or website. Write your own blog posts about hot topics and craft your own interesting tweets.

6. Follow and Follow Alike
Twitter isn’t like "Field of Dreams." You’re no Kevin Costner, so you need to follow people if you want people to follow you back. Following is important for networking, which could lead to new business opportunities and customers. Don’t just sit back and expect tweeters to flock to you, because they won’t.
